The Curse
The Curse
Li's curse is a three piece puzzle that she cannot solve herself. It forces her to rely on someone else to free her as a way to belittle her pride as a Kelpie. However, the curse prevents her from doing two additional things. She can't explain the curse in detail and she can't tell anyone her actual name.
The curse comes in three parts. The first part, Li is unable to interact with water. She can't touch it, drink it or even bathe in it. This goes for all forms of water, including rain. If she does, she suffers from excruciating pain and gets red welts on her skin as if she were hit with something burning where ever the water landed. This cuts Li off from the very element her kind need to survive.
The second part is the fact that Li is locked in her human form and unable to be anything else. She cannot shift into her horse form at all. She may still retain the strength, speed and endurance of that form but she cannot take the form itself. This is meant to keep her looking human.
The third part of the curse is the most brutal for her. Over time, the curse has been slowly trying to influence Li to be more human and slowly driving her mad. The intent of this part of the curse is to force her to be human and to feel guilt over what her herd did. The end result will be Li becoming human or driving her mad to the point of suicide.
The Solution for the Curse:
There IS a way to break the curse and it involves Li learning to trust someone to do it. The three parts of the curse need to be broken one at a time. The first part can be easily broken, giving her the ability to touch water again. The second part of the curse.. Involves figuring out Li's first name.
The problem is, Li cannot tell anyone her name. The curse prevents her from doing so much like it prevents her from telling anyone the exact nature of the curse. She has figured ways around it over the years by being vague or managing to tell bits and pieces of her herd's story for people to figure things out. But, that's as far as she can go.
Any attempts at magically finding out her name will only result in 'Li' .... which is both the shortened version of her name, aaand the atomic symbol for Lithium. Eventually someone will realize this, right?

Li is the only one that can tell it and it has to be to someone she trusts completely.However, as each part of the Curse defeated, the madness gets worse, making Li very unpredictable. To break the final part of the curse, Li has to trust someone enough to actually.. let them kill her after she reveals the last part of her name without fighting back. Once she breathes her last breath, the curse will be broken and Li will revert back to her original form and need to be immediately submerged in water to revitalize.

Lithium doesn't understand much about human emotions nor why they care about some of the things they do. To her, the world revolves around survival of the fittest and she's determined to survive no matter what the costs.

The cursed Kelpie

Lithium Amaranth is a Kelpie cursed to remain in human form by a Mage that her herd had angered. They had been driven inland by a large storm while most of the mares in the herd were either with child or caring for newborns. With the storms raging and preventing them from their usual hunts, they were forced to eat what they could find in the forest they were hiding it... which wasn't much.
A few of the younger members of the herd ventured into town and stole a young boy to eat, driven by their hunger in their starved state. Unfortunately, the boy they stole was the Mage's son. Once she realized her son had been taken, she sprung into action with the other villagers and hunted down the kelpie herd. Many of Li's herd were slaughtered, children included.
Li watched as her own daughter was killed in front of her. She flew into a rage attacking her daughter's killers and in the end, she was caught in one of the hunter's nets. She fought wildly to get free and because no one could get close to her in order to kill her, she was one of the last to remain alive.
The Mage used this opportunity to place a curse upon the remaining Kelpies. They were cursed to remain in their human forms for the rest of eternity and unable to touch water without pain. The curse was designed to slowly drive them mad by making them more and more human over time, forcing them to confront the guilt of all the lives they've taken over the years to feed their own appetites.
Of the five that were cursed, Li is the last one standing. The others were either killed or committed suicide as they lost more and more of themselves to the curse of humanity.
However, Li... was a fighter and despite being trapped in one form, she held tight to her anger and her animal instincts, letting them guide her as the years wore on. Because of the tragedy and the conditions of her own curse, she's not... the gentlest creature around and can be down right cutthroat and brutal both with actions and words.
But, for now, she wanders the world looking for a way to break her curse.
